Features - Top 5 VPN Review

Features

Whether your main concern is protecting your privacy while you browse the internet, or you want to be able to access websites and services that are blocked in your country, ExpressVPN aims to provide you with everything you need, all wrapped up in a friendly package that takes minutes to set up.

Unmetered bandwidth

Highly optimized servers promise unthrottled speeds, which should mean no problems in streaming HD video and music from services like Netflix, HBO Go and Spotify.

Servers in 87 countries [Updated – 8.7.16]

ExpressVPN has 136 servers across the globe, including numerous options up and down the East and West coasts of the US, making it easy to find a proximate server for streaming US-only media content, wherever you are in the world.

Total security & privacy

ExpressVPN has all the main bases covered, including 256-bit SSL encryption, a good range of VPN protocols, and a guarantee that no browsing logs are kept.

Comprehensive OS & Device compatibility

You get support for Windows, Mac and Linux, Android and iPhone, as well as support for most major gaming and media devices, including PS4, Xbox, Chromecast, Apple TV and many more. You can use ExpressVPN on three devices simultaneously [Updated – 8.7.16].

Fast setup and easy to use

ExpressVPN is one of the simplest VPN services to set up and configure. The software is straightforward and cleanly designed, and dedicated mobile apps make it a breeze to get running on your phone or tablet.

Privacy and Security - Top 5 VPN Review

Privacy and Security

While all reputable VPN services offer good privacy and security protection – after all, that’s one of the main selling points – ExpressVPN is second to none in this regard.

It offers a wide range of VPN protocols, including OpenVPN UDP/TCP, L2TP/IPSec, SSTP and PPTP, to ensure anonymous browsing. And all traffic between your device and the ExpressVPN servers are protected by powerful 256-bit SSL encryption, which should be sufficient to hide your activities from spying governments and criminals alike.

You can count on this level of protection, whether you’re using your computer, mobile phone or tablet, and even on a public Wi-Fi network.

Beyond that, ExpressVPN guarantees that no logs are kept of your browsing history and that it will not share your private information with third parties. As a logless VPN, ExpressVPN keeps no activity logs or session data, so there’s nothing to connect you to your browsing activities.

You can even pay for your subscription by Bitcoin if you’re looking for an added layer of anonymity.

Pricing - Top 5 VPN Review

Pricing

ExpressVPN’s pricing policy is as simple as it gets. You can choose to pay month-by-month, at $12.95 per month, or take on a 6- or 12-month subscription, which come in at $9.99 pm and $8.32 pm respectively. The only difference between the three options is the length of your commitment.
Whichever you go for, you can always take advantage of the 30-day money-back guarantee if the service doesn’t live up to your expectations. This is important as ExpressVPN doesn’t offer a free trial.

Speed - Top 5 VPN Review

Speed

You’d expect a service that goes by the name ExpressVPN to be pretty fast. Indeed, the company’s website states boldly that it is “the fastest VPN on earth”.

If you’re main concern is anonymity or sidestepping censorship this may not be your key criterion. But if you plan on using your VPN to access streaming services that aren’t offered where you live, then this is a crucial consideration in choosing the right VPN provider.

ExpressVPN claims to offer “unmetered bandwidth and speed”, so this shouldn’t be an issue. That’s the promise – so how did it perform?

Well, while there was a noticeable drop in speed, the service was still plenty fast enough for most people’s needs. A quick test using a UK-based server had HD video up and running on both All4 and Netflix within seconds.

The same was true for our mobile test. In fact, we downloaded the app, set it up and had an episode of Brooklyn Nine-Nine playing via Netflix, all in the space of about 3 minutes!

Ease of use - Top 5 VPN Review

Ease of Use

Set up and configuration is a real area of strength for ExpressVPN. If you’ve been meaning to set up a VPN at home but keep putting it off because you’re scared it might be too complicated, then we can put your mind at ease. Setup couldn’t be simpler.

Once you’ve subscribed to a plan, you’ll receive an email with a link to the software download page. The installation process is a simple click-and-go affair, and once the software is installed and you open the client for the first time you’ll be presented with an option to immediately connect to a recommended server.

Of course, you can browse the various servers on offer and save the most useful ones to you in a favorites list. Aside from that there is also the option to select a specific VPN protocol for your connection. Although if you leave this the software will automatically default to the best option for you.

There isn’t much to add when it comes to the ExpressVPN mobile app.

We tested the Android version and it offers all the same functionality as the desktop client, just optimized for touchscreens. When it’s running you’ll see an icon in your status bar and you can quickly access server and uptime information from the notification menu.

ExpressVPN really lives up to its name in the usability department. There may not be enough bells and whistles for power users, but the rest of us get a clean, intuitive interface that makes setting up VPN connections a one-click (or one-touch) process.

Customer Support - Top 5 VPN Review

Customer Support

If there’s one area where ExpressVPN really shines it’s in the speed and quality of their customer support. You can contact support by phone or email 24/7. But we love the live chat support.
When I asked about setting up VPN on my Netgear router I received a response within 15 seconds. Not only was the reply almost instantaneous, it was accurate and helpful, and also included links to the relevant tutorials on the site.

While we’re on the subject it’s only fair to draw attention to the excellent VPN tutorial section, which provides clear but comprehensive guides for setting up ExpressVPN on almost any OS or device you could imagine, including routers, games consoles and eBooks.

It’s easy to overlook support quality when considering purchasing a product but doing so can lead to major regrets if things don’t go smoothly. This is especially true of VPN services, where even tech-savvy consumers can find themselves lost when attempting a more complex set up.

Verdict - Top 5 VPN Review

Verdict

It’s easy to recommend ExpressVPN. It has a solid range of VPN protocols, comprehensive device support, streaming-friendly connection speeds, and offers strong privacy and security protection.
More than that, it makes setting up and using a VPN as intuitive and painless as can be. Which, along with the super responsive and helpful customer support, makes it the ideal VPN service for the mainstream.

It worked OK on my laptop although I still couldn’t get my Skype to work. I installed it onto my phone & had to remove it. Lots of installed apps didn’t work. I then tried to reinstall it on my phone which turned into an epic & I ended up having to cancel my years subscription in frustration! So disappointing! I am debating whether or not to attempt it again.

Hi I have a chromecast device I use with google browser.
I find the movie on my pc and then stream it via my chromecast to the tv.
I am in Australia. Is that something I can do with your service. Or is there an easier way, I have not got a smart tv . Panasonic 42″ it works fine the way I do it now. What will I achieve by getting VPN? Also is there a way to watch golf on Foxtel.?

    Reply
    • Andrew Marsden

      Hi Erik,
Using a VPN with your Chromecast will allow you to stream your TV shows and movies securely, and you would be able to access programs that you are currently unable to access in Australia. It won’t replace your Chromecast, but it will expand the content you can watch. Hope that answers your question.
      Best,

I don’t know which version of expressvpn you’re reviewing. The one I joined for a month doesn’t open any site (ordinary news etc sites).Very often the site opens only to freeze, the arrow goes everywhere , won’t scroll, won’t open another site, won’t close
that site, won’t do anything. I usually pull the power socket out of the wall.

it would be nice to have an option to increase the number of devices that can be active at the same time. This works well for families where family members may be transacting online in public places and forget to turn off express vpn after using. a nominal charge would be fine instead of having to buy another subscription. i’m wondering how many devices your competitors would allow.

I am sad to say I was very disappointed in this product. First of all, it was more expensive than for example NordVPN which I also tried. Second it created problems that made it unusable. 1) I took out one of my printers (that is the only problem they could solve); 2) To took out Pidgin Messenger and they had no solutions other than when I wanted to use it turn their product off. But even that didn’t work because it took 4 tries after I removed the program to get Pidgin working again; 3) I could not use my email with this program. The blamed my ISP (Mediacom) for the problem claiming they were probably blocking it. Mediacom said it wasn’t on their end. Actually I could occasionally get my email – but I couldn’t never send. Their only solution was to turn off ExpressVPN any time I wanted to used my email. Since I download messages every 10 minutes and often have to respond this isn’t workable. So, I cancelled my subscription. Overall I couldn’t give it better than a 2 because I couldn’t use it. I also was disappointed in customer support because they didn’t have solutions for their own products.

You’ve posted very unfair reviews. I’ve used Express VPN for my personal use, when I was traveling to Korea. I was facing too much problems with this VPN service. They don’t even have live chat support. They only offer an email support, which takes almost a whole day to reply.
They are not providing VPN service but providing these:-
    1- Slow speed
    2- Disconnects too often
3- Prices are very high (Service is not as good as described, totally waste of money)

      Hi Rich,
Many expats living in Thailand use VPNs to access websites that are restricted. The Thai government is increasingly restricting many of the sites you probably plan to access, so a VPN will give you secure access to these sites, without exposing your identity. ExpressVPN is a good VPN choice to use when you’re in Thailand.
      Good luck with your move,

    Hi Andrew,
I have both Nord VPN and Express VPN.
In regard to speed Nord VPN comes out on top particularly upload speed, Nord VPN being over twice as fast.
Also, when you first use Express VPN after using Nord VPN it seems a bit agricultural, particularly in regard to features and changeability, probably more for the advanced user.
Big thing in Nord VPN favour is that I signed up for two years, $105.00 AU total.
One year with Express VPN cost $132.00 AU for a one year subscription.
But one thing I noticed is that when I do an IP address search Nord VPN is clearly identified as a, Services: Network sharing device or proxy server.
When I do a similar IP address search using Express VPN it is not identified, Services:
    None detected.
Does this mean it is better at hiding your identity and is therefore more secure.

Various people have told me that i should get a VPN (expressVPN or PureVPN etc…) I am still unsure if i need to get a VPN. I will be using my laptop mainly for personal reasons such as Netflix, personal emails, online banking, and study. Can you please advise if getting a VPN is an advantage to me and if Norton will suffice.

      Hi Paddy,
Thank you for your question. Saudi Arabia practices some of the strictest Internet censorship in the world, so if you want to access Netflix or any other US sites, I highly recommend getting a VPN for your trip. Also, if you plan to do any online banking, a VPN is always recommended, because when traveling there is a good chance the Internet you’re using is not 100% secure. ExpressVPN is a great VPN choice for Saudi Arabia.

I play alot on these online casinos that accept bitcoin and all that. But sometimes when you sign up you get a really good match bonus so i like to try and make multiple accounts. But i think that they may have caught on and have set it up to lag on me or something of the sort because i never can get it to spin all the way through now like it is supposed to . Now im not saying they are doing this but my question to you is i was using a VPN to begin with called ZenMate which by the way is a great VPN. So i wasnt sure how they were seeing the accounts that i had. i used a different name so i know it wasnt that obvious. anyway i also checked to see if my VPN was leaking my real ip address and that also isnt the case. so im not sure. but all in all what i need to know is how did that happen and also is there a VPN out there that you would recomend me using for that sort of thing. im a big time gamer as it is so it will also be used for the ps4 and other big systems. and i dont want any kind of tie back to me at all. like as far as being able to match up with other accounts that i have. so if you have any suggestions it would be helpful id greatly appreciate it. thanks

I feel pissed at myself for putting myself out there like that. But I was thinking ‘It won’t happen to me’. Well, it did. My question is. Is it too late for me? I’d recommend you take a look at our article on torrenting and VPNs, which you can find here.

Unfortunately, there’s no turning the clock back on your previous strikes but with a reliable VPN with the right features (a kill switch is a must) there’s no reason you can’t continue to torrent worry-free in the future.

I have a question about ExpressVPN and if it can provide the type of service I’m looking for. My son tends to stream movies on his tablet (my old Android tablet). He found an app that allows him to stream movies via torrents and he’s watched a few movies.

What I noticed was that our isp info was tracked and logged. Would VPNExpress be a way to block this. Since he’s watched these movies, I’ve been receiving blanket unwanted email solicitations.

    Thanks

    Reply
    • Andrew

      Hi Keith,

Torrenting is a surefire way to expose your IP address publicly since it’s based on peer-to-peer sharing. A torrent-friendly VPN – of which ExpressVPN is probably the best – is exactly what you need to keep your info under wraps.

ExpressVPN is great for this task because it doesn’t slow your connection speed, doesn’t log your activities online, and has a kill switch to ensure that your son won’t ever connect to a torrenting site without the VPN switched on.

You can get a great signup offer on ExpressVPN right here.

      I hope that helps.

      Hi Wolfie,

A VPN might help with the low speeds you’re experiencing if your ISP is throttling your download speeds. However, the most likely cause of the poor streaming quality is the sheer number of people trying to access such EPL streams.
Using a VPN to access a geo-restricted paid services like beIN Sport is the best option, in our opinion.

Hi Andrew, I am looking at getting a VPN and have been closely researching Express which has good reviews. Being new to using a VPN how many devices can this be used on. I run a small business from home with 2 x desktops, 2 x laptops and 2 x ipads plus 2 x smart TV’s. Is there a restriction on where you can access this from and how many devices? realistically only 2-3 would be used at any one time. Can smart TV’s access this if connected to home WIFI network? Lots of questions sorry but want to do it right first time. Many thanks. Mike

    • Andrew

      Hi Mike,

You won’t go far wrong by choosing ExpressVPN.

Overall, it’s one of the best VPN services I’ve tested. It’s compatible with a massive range of devices, including all the main desktop and phone operating systems, games consoles, streaming devices and some SmartTV brands. A subscription covers 3 simultaneous connections, although you can set the VPN up on all of the devices so it’s easy to switch quickly. Another option is to set up the VPN on your router. Now, not all routers are compatible, but if your one is (or if you decide it’s worth the investment to buy one), then you can use an unlimited number of devices simultaneously.

To get started with ExpressVPN, click here.

Alternatively, if you want a VPN provider that offers more simultaneous connections, VyperVPN is a good choice, and it gives you 10 connections at once! Click here to get started.

      Hi Rudy,

Good news: ExpressVPN should be compatible with both phones. Windows Phone requires manual setup but it’s not as complicated as it sounds and there are clear instructions on the ExpressVPN website.
You can still take advantage of our 1 year + 3 months free offer by signing up via the following link: ExpressVPN Signup.

I’m going to buy a VPN service. But first I would like to know if I will also need to continue my Norton 360 virus checker. Last question. I have the Windows 10 operating system on my laptop. Will I be able to download your VPN or will I have to delete the Windows 10 security feature first. If so how do I do it?

      Hi Samuel,

ExpressVPN is a really solid choice of VPN. I doubt you’ll be disappointed. In answer to your questions:
      1. You should still keep an up-to-date antivirus on your computer. A VPN certainly provides protection and anonymity in various ways but it isn’t designed to replace all the functions of a good antivirus product.
      2. You shouldn’t need to make any changes to your Windows 10 security settings in order to use ExpressVPN. The Setup Wizard will take you through the whole installation process automatically, although there are full instructions and a video on the ExpressVPN site.

You can get started by opening an account here.

      Good luck!

Watching Chinese TV from Hong Kong ExpressVPN server is IMPOSSIBLE:
1 – Downloading speed is too low for CCTV4 (3Mb/s is a minimum to be able to watch online TV).
2 – IP is blacklisted for CCTV5 and others channels.
3 – Refunding seems IMPOSSIBLE because I cannot access to my account.

My wife and I are going to India for five months. We would like to watch BBC I player on occasions. Is Express VPN the best choice?

    Reply
    • Andrew

      Hi Robin,

ExpressVPN is a VPN we usually recommend for most needs. It’s worth though that the BBC does everything in its power to block VPN servers from accessing iPlayer, so we cannot guarantee ANY VPN will work flawlessly at all times. Having said that, with its 30-day money-back guarantee, ExpressVPN is definitely worth a shot!

      Hi Darrell,

A VPN is a must-have for any ex-pat in Saudi Arabia. We don’t see any reason to look beyond ExpressVPN. It remains a top pick for us – one you can count on for anonymity, fast speeds and user-friendly software.

      Good luck in Saudi!

I live in Canada and the main reason I am looking to switch to a Von is to be able to watch USA Netflix without the “proxy server” lockout happening that I am experiencing now. Our house watches Netflix currently on 2 smart tvs and 1 Xbox. With unblock us.com we were doing everything through my wireless router. Is a VPN router my best option to watch Netflix on smart tvs and Xbox ?

Hi Andrew. I am looking at ways to be able to watch English Premier League soccer matches live. I am in Australia and since Optus outbid Foxtel for the rights to broadcast live games I can only get delayed coverage of games as I am a Telstra user for phones and Internet.
Will a VPN and in particular, yours, allow me access to a way of watching games (Liverpools) live???

      Hi Trevor,

EPL games generally require subscription to a premium sports network, wherever you are in the world. One of the best value options in the Middle East-based beIN Sport, which you would be able to access using ExpressVPN.

You can get access by clicking here.

I have thoroughly tested three top providers NordVPN ExpressVPN and PUreVPN.
    NordVPN is the fastest consistantly
ExpressVPN apart from all the hiperbole is not that fast as a matter of fact I found it no faster than PureVPN which i regarded as slow so I asked for my money back.
I will be doing the same with ExpressVPN the reviews are loaded and inaccurate my speed tests and Express VPN tests show that their servers are slow and that’s a fact apart from the rubbish you read.

Can i use this to follow a US football team around the country. I want to watch them even though they are out of market in my viewing area. Thx

    Reply
    • Andrew

      Hi Chas,

If the games were all shown live online, and were restricted to specific geographical areas within the US (state, city, county) AND a VPN provider had servers in each of those areas it might work.
Unfortunately, most VPN providers only have servers in a handful of American cities.
Then again, I’ve never heard of online content being restricted to a specific state or city, so it might be worth checking if you have access to games shown online from around the country.

      Hope that helps.

WinRiddance FreeJack I agree with him or her. I have only used PIA for a month and have been searching other VPN trying to make a sound decision. ExpressVPN is high on many lists so I decided to give it a try. I am not (yet) intelligent enough to know if I am being protected well or not so I wont comment. However I do know my IP address does change. One area I have tested is speed. EVPN states they are the fastest on earth. Maybe so but not on my computer. (Win 10 64) Testing on SPEEDOF.ME, NY server (I am in Pa.) EVPN with EPIC Privacy browser: Lat 79, Dwn, 15.57, Up 1.85, using IE 11: Lat 45, Dwn, 14.83, Up, 1.79. PIA with EPIC: Lat, 57, Dwn, 18.05, Up 2.12, using IE: Lat 24, Dwn, 18.13, Up, 2.07. NO VPN: EPIC, Lat 56, Dwn 19.12, Up 2.26. IE: Lat 22, Dwn 19.24, Up 2.14. I pay for 15gb and regardless of the speed test site I use I am always in the range of the highest numbers shown here.
SO, for me EVPN is not very vast. Also, PIA has always responded quickly to any questions asked. EVPN I have sent two questions. One has been over 17 hours ago, the other over 19 hours ago and still no response. At 6:33 PM eastern time CHAT was not available. The third message I sent EVPN is for a full refund. I may keep looking at other VPN’s but MY experience says PIA is a pretty good service.

What about compatibility issues with Win 10 O/S.?? I recently used HMA with Win 10 and it totally screwed up my O/S. I had to remove, reset to previous setting and reboot.

      Hi Jan,

You shouldn’t have any problems with using ExpressVPN on your Windows 10 system. Just download the Windows app and follow the instructions. You can get started here.
You may have experienced problems with HMA if you upgraded Windows with HMA already installed on your computer. This is a Windows 10 issue rather than one that is specific to HMA. Generally a clean install of your VPN software after upgrade will solve any issues.

      I hope that helps.

Does it noticeably slow down your internet speed if just say I was browsing on my computer.

      Hi Ken,

You shouldn’t see any noticeable slowdown when using the internet via ExpressVPN. We got great speeds and found the service highly reliable both for browsing and streaming HD video. They also offer a money-back guarantee, so there’s really nothing to lose by trying it out. You can get started here.

      Best,
