Spotify has rocketed in popularity, creeping up on iTunes as our main desktop music player. However, licensing restrictions is preventing many from enjoying the streaming service – well, Americans mostly.
But where there’s a will, there’s a way. Using a VPN service will allow you to disguise your physical location and enable you to enjoy the streaming service in all its glory.
Here’s how to unblock Spotify
- Choose a VPN provider. The VPN software will act as a bridge between your computer and the internet, securing the connection and altering your IP location. Make sure you pick a VPN with good bandwidth that allows access to geo-blocked content.
- Sign up to Spotify Open. When you’re all set up with a VPN service and you’ve selected a Spotify-friendly gateway, e.g. London, complete the signup process but use a postcode from your pretend location (Google Maps will help here). Then reaffirm that you’d like to sign up for Spotify Open (when prompted) and click the orange button.
- Launch Spotify. Make sure you’re still logged into the same VPN gateway (from sign-up), and enter the login details. Once Spotify has launched, you’re good to go. You can even close the VPN and use a local gateway to improve streaming speed.
