Features - Top 5 Best VPN Review

Features

NordVPN has a number of security features that make it particularly unique and attractive for users looking to protect their privacy.

Double Data Encryption

NordVPN has a double encryption system called DoubleVPN which uses a double-node server link in order to lock down inbound and outbound data. This is done using AES-256-CBC encryption, which is considered military grade, and is applied twice to increase security levels.

Automatic Kill Switch

To ensure users are protected even if connection is somehow disrupted, NordVPN offers a kill switch that shuts down all applications that may be able to access your information or location due to a temporary disconnect from the VPN service. This feature is particularly popular among users who access location-sensitive services such as online gaming or file sharing.

DNS Leak Resolver

DNS servers can often become a security risk because they can send queries that are not encrypted, giving external entitles access to private information, such as your IP address and the websites you’ve visited. In most cases, you won’t even know that such information has been sent. NordVPN prevents this by ensuring that all of your DNS queries are secure whenever you’re connected to the service.

Strict No-Logs Policy

In order to remain completely anonymous online, NordVPN never logs your activities on its servers. They use a Tor over VPN solution to send encrypted traffic over the Tor network. The traffic is always encrypted as it bounces to different locations around the world in order to make it near-impossible to trace.

Privacy and Security - Top 5 Best VPN Review

Privacy and Security

NordVPN places a strong emphasis on protecting their users’ privacy and has the added benefit of ensuring that all user activity and logs are never saved on their servers. In addition to the multiple security measures mentioned above, NordVPN offers security extras which include encrypted chat, secret notes which allow you to send self-destructing notes to friends, and web proxy extensions. Multiple protocols are available, including PPTP, L2TP/IPSec, and OpenVPN.

Pricing - Top 5 Best VPN Review

Pricing

NordVPN has three very simple subscription plans. You can choose to pay on a monthly basis, purchase 6 months in advance, or 1 year in advance. The longer you commit to, the lower the cost per month will be. A monthly subscription costs $11.95, whereas a 6-month subscription costs $42 which is $7 a month, and a 1-year subscription is $69, which is $5.75 a month.

Speed - Top 5 Best VPN Review

Speed

NordVPN offers 559 servers in 49 countries around the globe, and you can choose servers that are customized for specific actions. For example, if you are using the VPN service to stream video, you can connect to the ultra-fast servers, but if you are looking for high security when browsing websites, connect to the Tor over VPN or DoubleVPN servers. NordVPN also offers Anti-DDoS servers for users who want to be protected against DDoS attacks.

When using NordVPN, we saw no delay or change in speed when streaming videos, accessing online games, or browsing sites.

Ease of use - Top 5 Best VPN Review

Ease of Use

NordVPN is very easy to install and use and requires zero technical experience or knowledge.

Download and installation take only about a minute and the process doesn’t require any configuration on the user’s end. Once installed, all you have to do is enter your username and password and you can start using NordVPN.

The main interface screen lets you choose two different views for choosing servers. You can view a list of countries and simply click the country you’d like to connect to, or you can look at the servers list if you want to connect to a specific type of server. The entire process is very straightforward and simple. The interface is designed in a way that makes it very clear what you need to do in order to use it.

In the Settings menu you can configure simple settings like whether or not it starts automatically when your computer is turned on, whether or not you’d like to add DNS leak protection, the default protocol, and more.

Customer Support - Top 5 Best VPN Review

Customer Support

NordVPN has a help desk and knowledge center on their website where you can access tutorials and articles about different topics. It’s a great place to search for specific questions that you may have about using the software or any technical difficulties. If you can’t find the information you’re looking for on the website, you can contact the support team via email or chat and their response time is pretty fast.

If you’d like NordVPN to add more features to their software, you can post a suggestion on their community board and be updated if the feature you wanted has been added to the latest version.

Verdict - Top 5 Best VPN Review

Verdict

Overall, NordVPN is a great choice, especially if you’re not very technical or don’t want to deal with too many configurations or technical features. The prices are very low compared to other VPNs on the market, especially if you choose the 1-year subscription and support is provided around the clock via email, chat, and even Facebook. The interface itself is extremely straightforward and simple to use and takes only a minute to install and get connected. One of the great things about NordVPN is the fact that it provides high security and privacy protection without compromising your internet speed, so if you plan on streaming videos online or playing online games, it’s a great VPN option.

      Hi A. Olsen,
Thanks for your question. Chromecast does not support built-in VPN functionality, but there are two ways of setting up a VPN connection with your Chromecast. One is to share the VPN connection from your PC, and the other is to set up your router with a VPN. For set up instructions, check out this article from NordVPN.

I am in the process of purchasing a VPN for my home. I like the fact that I can use up to 6 devices with this product. One issue that keep bothering me is will a VPN cancel my “Magic Jack” phone?

    Reply
    • Andrew Marsden

      Hi Ed,
Thanks for your question. While there is a chance that using a VPN with your MagicJack phone could cause a block to your phone’s connections, the good news is that there is a solution. You issue is solved by using a ‘route’ command to associate MagicJack IP address to your local gateway, instead of the VPN. In order to learn how to do this, you can follow this How To Guide.
      Good luck,

I work for an US company mostly via Cisco VPN. Planning a 3 weeks vacation but want to work in the 2nd week. If I just use company’s VPN, a non-US IP will be assigned, for example, a server in London. Can I use a VPN solution such as NordVPN to hide my location when connecting to my company’s VPN server? Thus, connect to NordVPN server in USA, then run Cisco VPN to company’s server in US. Is it possible?

Hi, I want to use the service to access UK TV from a house in majorca, I intend to buy a fast internet connection from telefonica in spain and attach my TV to the broadband. I intend to use an amazon firestick to access uk tv, primarily terrestrial channels. I then want to put a vpn on the router provided by telefonica to connect to the services in the UK. This means I wont have to get a new satellite dish. Will this work? Or am I better advised to put the VPN on a PC and use a cast device like Chromecast to access the TV channels I want?

    Reply
    • Andrew

      Hi Mr. Pizza,

I love your work! As to your question, it’s certainly possible to set up NordVPN on your router. You can find a list of compatible routers on the company’s site, as well as details of routers that can be upgraded with custom firmware. It can get complicated though, especially when you mix in the issue of a Fire Stick, which can also require some tinkering to work happily with a VPN.
I think, given the general hassle of setting everything up, you may find it simpler to go with the latter option, of setting up the VPN directly on your PC.

      I hope that helps.

How can yuo even put Nord on the list? It is so damn slow that it is not even worth it. With Nord, I was lucky to get 200KBps. It topped out at just over 230KBs. It never got any higher than that. It did not matter what protocol you used, nothing changed. I switch back to IPVanish and now get almost 1.5MBs.
Only issue with IPVanish at the moment is there is a bug in their VPN software but I am sure it will be resolved soon.

I must say, the service exceeded my expectations. I tried bunch of VPN providers and Nord wasn’t my first choice probably because of these mixed reviews I found here and there. However after a complete nightmare with PIA I decided to give them a chance and thank God I did this. I subscribed monthly at first in order to trial the service and it was a winner in all aspects. Speed was great, barely noticed any drop down, apps were working flawlessly and the variety of features they presented was simply astonishing.

However, after previous terrible experience I thought I shouldn’t be too ecstatic and and make a decision after my 30 day test is complete, so I waited the whole month and you know what – experience was simply great. It was a no brainer when it came to resubscribing. The only small pity I have now is that this two year deal was not introduced at the time I subscribed, so I went with annual sub for $48. Service is worth every penny and if all goes well, Nord will have a customer for life. Don’t stop impressing me!

Are you surprised that company is using a payment processor based in New York, instead of Panama? After UK’s government went mad, friend recommended Nord. I read few decent reviews myself and decided to give it a shot. I must say that this was the best digital purchase in years.
Simple and great looking outside comes with a powerful inside in one click. I can change my virtual location to basically any country in the world, speed drop is almost non-existing, and I can configure all of my devices using only one subscription.
And although I purchased the service in order to increase my privacy, I received an unexpected bonus: I can access US Netflix and Pandora.

I am definitely going to recommend the service for everyone I know.

After sending them a few emails they finally got back to me with asking me to send them screen shots of two websites from links they sent me. I started using Nord two years ago and it was great seeing them grow. They started with one OpenVPN based Windows client only and ~30 or so servers. Now they support IKEv2 and OpenVPN protocols, offer more than 600 servers worldwide, developed apps for most platforms (still waiting for Linux though) and provide multiple additional features.

There still are few things Nord could improve with, however I am working in IT myself and I know how things can be complicated there, so such progress in such a short time is definitely amazing. I am really looking forward into what they will eventually become and recommend the service to everyone.

This is a horrible service. Are you on the payroll for telling these fabrications?
I don’t think I can ever express my exhaustion, discuss, and disbelief received from my NordVPN experience, but I’ll try. I was with VyperVPN and getting on nominal satifaction; I wanted quicker response and ease in a vpn so I read about Nord and decided to give it try. I am living in China and need help to hear about America and friends.
Withing moments of buying into NordVPN they withdrew their money from my account and sent me an email stating welcome. They didn’t take the time to hook me into their service. I had to go back online to get it and found that I couldn’t get to their site without the use of my old vpn. I finally downloaded their software to find that because I was already in China I had to download and install other software to assist their site (this is true for all also planning to use the site in China in the future and something they never made me aware of prior to buying their service.)
This extra needed software comes with vague instructions in several small packets that you must go into command prompt to install. I’m not a computer technician but I plowed through it for 4 HOURS the first day trying to get it to work. During this time I attempted to get NordVPN customer service to help but a message would appear that no service was available at that time. I quit and wen to bed frustrated hoping for better results in the morn.
On the second day a worked another 6 HOURS on setting up the “command prompts” and trying to get through to NordVPN customer help. Never, ever reached a help site. After 6 hours of working and reworking their instructions and reloading their packets, I was able to get to the NordVPN site. I was instructed at that time that anytime I went off their vpn and wanted back on I would have to go back into command prompt and make two alterations. (This meant that I would have to spend about 10 minutes each session just acquiring their services to get on the net.)
So, now that I had their software installed, I made my first attempt to get on the net. I tried several of their sites with the same result, I never got on. Each time you attempt to get on you have to put so much in that you should not even have to be aware of. Their software program should handle all that without you having to think about it. Their site is hard, complicated and made for only a computer geek to enjoy.
I wrote NordVPN (the only way I could contact them is through the email I had received from them using another vpn) and told them of my frustration and that I just wanted their experience to end so I was quitting their service, explained why and wanted a refund. This all took place withing 36 hours of signing up with them. They finally replied within 48hrs with another email stating that they were sorry of my inconvenience AND gave me another set of instructions to farther try and see if the service would work then. They said nothing of a refund such as their ad states you have time to enjoy their service of get your money back.
I replied to them that I didn’t want to work with more instructions, I wanted a vpn that was user friendly and wanted my money refunded immediately. They replied that refunds may take up to 72 HOUS to respond to. I’m past the 72hrs now and have not received any word/email for NordVPN nor does my account show the refund.
I would not and will never give this service a rating of more than 0 out of 5 and never recomment it to anyone.
I will note here that since this occurred, I have signed up with ExpressVPN, downloaded their software without the use of a vpn, and got on to the net all within 10 minutes and no hassles. I come and go quickly on ExpressVPN and the uploading and downloading is phenomenally fast. It costs more but well worth it to anyone.
I will keep posting until NordVPN decides it should stick to its word and pay up if a customer is not satisfied.

I mistakely bought NordVPN for 1 year and any of the US server are too slow from 80 Mpbs to 5-10 Mpbs. I can’t watch any TV shows and sometime there are no connection and no data transmitting. SmartPlay is badly optimized. Very disappointed. VyprVPN is the fast server ever. A connection from Denmark to US still fast as my current bandwidth 80 Mbps, but i cancel it already because it collect logs and i do torrenting sometimes.

What speed throughput will I expect to have on my 1G fiber connection in Central Texas?

      Hi Lynn,

It’s really difficult to give you an accurate estimate for something like this as there are just too many variables. However, you’ll certainly get speeds fast enough to allow uninterrupted streaming of HD content.
Your best bet is to take advantage of NordVPN’s generous 30-day money-back guarantee and try it for yourself. Their customer support are also excellent when it comes to helping you tweak your settings to get the best speeds possible.

      Good luck!

how good is this device to work in China?

      Hi Annu,
In China OpenVPN protocol is usually blocked, so NordVPN standard apps won’t work, but they have custom solutions as obfsproxy, and pptp/l2tp protocols. You can check NordVPN tutorials section for more information.

So using this, no one will know what I am looking at, streaming, downloading, pages I am surfing? Big brother cannot watch?

      Hi CM,
All user activity and logs are never saved on NordVPN servers, protecting user privacy is one of their main goals. You shouldn’t be worried about Big brother :)

I tried NordVPN and they were the slowest service I have ever used. I have 26 Mbs service, and I never got above 6 Mbs with any connection in the USA. I got one UK server that gave me 21 Mbs for a brief period, then that dropped to 5 Mbs. I have used Vyper, IP Vanish, and PIA and NordVPN was by far the SLOWEST. I had technical support have me uninstall and re-install another software version, and they told me to try a specific server in Germany, and that didn’t work, so they had me use what they called P2P servers, and those stunk as well. I also got “bumped” from several US servers, which was even more frustrating. I’m not some commercial user or abuser. I just a regular user that wants to protect himself from all the predators others trying to take over your computer and hold you hostage or steal your identity, but I do lie to watch TV online and stream movies.
I based my purchase on your review and I was very disappointed.
I finally gave up and cancelled and requested a refund, which they have promised.

I live in New Jersey with 50 Mbps connection. At first I had similar issues with Nord, speed went down to about 20 Mbps or so. However after contacting their support, they suggested to use UDP protocol and provided me with server location list so I could pick a server close to me. Once I did that, I had no problems whatsoever, speed rarely drops to less than 40 Mbps so it’s fine with me.

I am seriously considering NordVPN but one of my devices requiring it is an Amazon Firestick. I understand it is tricky to use it with VPN, unless you can advise differently?

      Hi,

You’re right, although it’s totally possible to unlock geographical restrictions on the Fire Stick it isn’t a straightforward process. Whether you use a VPN or a DNS Proxy (both offered as part of the Nord VPN subscription) it requires you to set up on your router rather than the device itself.
To set up a router on a VPN you need a VPN-compatible router (there’s lots of information about this on the NordVPN site). You can buy one via NordVPN if you don’t already have one, but it might be easier to set up a DNS proxy on your router, as this doesn’t require special hardware. It’s worth noting, though, that a proxy won’t provide you with the security and anonymity you get with a VPN. However, it has no impact on your internet speeds, so it can be a great option for streaming.

I am military in Germany and want to download the Vpn to my Telekom router. Is the router supported through NORD VPN?

      Hi Rob,

It’s possible to set up NordVPN on a router, but it requires compatible hardware. It’s worth checking with the company to see if your current router is compatible but you may need to purchase a VPN-ready router. Another option is to use NordVPN’s DNS proxy service, which comes as part of the package. This is compatible with almost all routers.
